Thomas Henderson

Thomas C. Henderson was formally introduced as Huston-Tillotson University's athletic director on Sept. 19, 2023. With more than 20 years of experience managing athletic programs, departments, competitions, events, and facilities, Henderson brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the university.
 
Henderson's educational background is extensive, with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Sports and Science from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University), and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University Texas. He is currently pursuing his Ed.D. in Applied Learning Sciences from the University of Miami.
 
Henderson's career has been marked by success and achievements. No stranger to HT, he joined the university in 2012 when he was named as the head men's basketball coach. He led the team to three consecutive Red River Conference tournament appearances, and guided the Rams to their first winning season in nine years in 2019. Throughout his tenure, Henderson has cultivated a culture of commitment and excellence within the men's basketball program.
 
In addition to his role as head coach, Henderson served as the assistant athletic director at Huston-Tillotson from 2014 through 2019. His dedication and leadership were instrumental in the overall success of the athletic department, and he played a crucial role in ensuring compliance with NAIA rules and regulations.
 
Before joining our university, Henderson gained valuable experience as the assistant men's basketball coach at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. During his time there, the team achieved a program-best 27 wins and earned a bid to the national tournament.
 
Henderson's coaching career also includes positions at various high schools in Texas, including Ellison High School, Manor High School, Wheatley High School, and Reagan High School. His impressive track record saw him being awarded his district’s Coach of the Year in 2007, and again in 2012.
 
As the new athletic director, Henderson will bring his expertise in student assessment, program operation, resource allocation, team development, coaching, training, and strategic planning to drive the continued success of our athletic programs at Huston-Tillotson. His commitment to student-athletes' academic progress and success, as well as his dedication to personal and professional growth, make him the perfect fit for this role.
