OLLU squeaks past Rams 72-70

HT hosts LSU–Shreveport on Thursday at Branch Gymnasium

SAN ANTONIO – A run of 12 unanswered points late in Saturday's game helped lift Our Lady of the Lake to a 72-70 victory over the visiting Huston-Tillotson men's basketball team.

HT's Cade Holzman scored 15 points, while teammate Charles Hallmon chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Rams (6-14, 6-12 RRAC), who were denied a season sweep of OLLU.

The Rams claimed a big 75-66 win over the Saints in Austin back in December. OLLU was ranked No. 20 in the NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches' Poll and were undefeated prior to HT's December victory.

Lonzo Rand scored 18 points for the Saints (17-6, 13-6 RRAC) in Saturday's win over the Rams, leading four OLLU players scoring in double figures.

After HT's Ja'Patrick Blackmon hit a 3-pointer to give the Rams a 62-55 lead with 6:56 remaining in the game, the Saints scored the next 12 points to reclaim a five-point lead. The Rams were held scoreless until Holzman made a pair of free throws with 1:21 left to play to cut OLLU's lead to 67-64.

HT would trim the OLLU advantage to one point on a tip-in by Hallmon with 1:05 remaining but would get no closer as the Saints iced the game at the free throw line. OLLU shot 23 free throws in the game, making their first 22 of the contest.

The Rams, meanwhile, shot only 50 percent from the free throw line, going to the line only 10 times and making five attempts.

Isaiah Halliburton scored nine points and handed out four assists for the Rams, while Malkeyce Harris chipped in eight points off the HT bench. Blackmon, Jackson Byas, and Braelon Steals added seven points apiece for the Rams.

HT returns to action Thursday, Feb. 6, when the Rams host LSU–Shreveport at Branch Gymnasium on the HT campus. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
