ROUND ROCK, Texas – After a two-week hiatus, Huston-Tillotson University's women's soccer team returned to action Thursday as they opened Red River Athletic Conference play against Jarvis Christian.
Â
The visiting Bulldogs spoiled HT's home-opener as they claimed a 2-0 victory in the only completed match of a scheduled women's-and-men's doubleheader.
Â
Priscila Hernandez gave Jarvis Christian the lead with a well-placed, 35-yard strike into the top of the HT goal in the 27th minute. Erika Trivino capped the scoring with a corner-kick goal with less than 12 minutes remaining in the match.
Â
The Rams were not without their chances to level the match, particularly in the second half. Barbados national
Cheyanna Burnett-Griffith had an opportunity to tie the contest seven minutes after halftime, but the her shot from close range was saved by JCU goalkeeper Jazul Amaya.
Â
In the 76th minute, Burnett-Griffith was the target of
America Macias' corner kick, but the pass was just wide enough to prevent Burnett-Griffith from getting a clean strike before Amaya scooped up the ball.
Â
HT's freshman goalkeeper
Zoey Gonzales, an Austin native, made five saves in her third consecutive start of the Rams' four matches this season.
Â
The Rams will seek out their first win of the season Saturday when they host Texas College at the Onion Creek Soccer Complex. HT claimed a 16-0 victory over the Steers when the teams met last season.
Â
The Onion Creek Soccer Complex is located at 5600 E. William Cannon Dr. in Austin.
