AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's volleyball team officially opened the 2024 season with a Saturday matinee at Eastside Early College High School.
After a scrimmage match at 1 p.m., the Rams faced Nelson University in the late afternoon match, with the visiting Lions winning in three sets.
Scores of the match were 25-9, 25-16, and 25-15.
Chloe Gaytan led the Rams with seven kills, followed by five kills apiece from HT newcomers Angelina Munoz and Ka'Mari Pointer. Munoz' five kills against one attack error gave her a .222 hitting percentage for the match, which led the Rams.
Elaina Spriggins tallied 21 assists and eight digs for HT, while Danelle McCullough led the Rams' defensive effort with 11 digs. Aniyah Asberry chipped in seven digs.
Nelson, which was formerly known as Southwestern Assemblies of God University, was led by 10 kills apiece from Lilly Hanna and Bailee Alexander.
The Rams return to action Friday, Aug. 30, when they face Kansas Wesleyan in a neutral-court match in San Antonio at Our Lady of the Lake University's Mabee Gymnasium. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
