HT Rams Student-Athlete of the Month: Gabriel Iwuala

AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University men's basketball player Gabriel Iwuala has been recognized as his sport's HT Rams Student-Athlete of the Month. He is among the first student-athletes to be honored as part of a new program to recognize HT's outstanding student-athletes in their sport and in the classroom.
 
Gabriel is a freshman majoring in History at HT. A 6-foot-9 forward from San Antonio, he graduated from Midway High School in Waco in Spring 2025. Gabriel suffered a knee injury prior to the start of the 2025-26 season, but he is currently in rehab for the injury, and in the meantime, has been a valuable student assistant for his team.

Why did you choose to attend Huston-Tillotson University?
Education and to find a good path for me to be successful while at the same time playing the sport I love.
 
What does being a student-athlete at HT mean to you?
I am just grateful that have this opportunity to play and learn.
 
What has been your biggest accomplishment so far this season?
What I hope will be my biggest accomplishment this season is to improve from last year and learn.
 
What motivates you to excel academically and athletically?
My coaches and teachers. They believe in you being successful and motivate you to push yourself.
 
Who has had the biggest impact on your athletic journey and why?
My family. They help me out with so many situations in life with basketball and education.
 
How do you balance academics, athletics, and personal life?
Making and maintaining a daily schedule and setting aside times for basketball, studying for my classes, and talking to my family.
 
What goals have you set for yourself for the remainder of the season?
My main goals this season are to get back in shape from my knee injury and being 100 percent healthy.
 
What is something about you that most people don't know?
I am a chill person who cool with everyone around me.
 
What advice would you give to future HT student-athletes?
Have a strong mindset, manage yout time well, be kind to others, always ask for help when you need it, and be yourself.
 
What song gets you hyped before a game?
WALK by Hulvey, Lecrae; Spiritual Pressure by Errol Allen.
