AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday with visiting Howard Payne, giving the Rams their first winning streak of the season against different opponents.
The Rams defeated their NCAA Division III opponent 6-5 in the first game, while the Yellow Jackets took game two by a score of 12-0.
With their game one victory over Howard Payne, the Rams claimed consecutive wins over different opponents for the first time since the 2022 season, when they defeated Texas A&M–San Antonio and Louisiana Christian in back-to-games in April of that year.
The Rams return to action Saturday when they visit Texas A&M–Texarkana for a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader. HT will then travel to Louisiana for two games at LSU–Alexandria on Sunday.
GAME ONE: HT Rams 6, Howard Payne 5
A pair of Howard Payne fielding errors opened the door to a five-run second inning for the Rams as they built a lead they would not relinquish.
Aliyah Resendiz,
Isabella Roblero,
Grecia Bazaldua, and
Alayali Alaniz all knocked consecutive RBIs to help HT build a 5-1 lead.
Menina Cavazos' RBI double in the bottom of the third that scored
Aidan Johnson stretched the Ram lead to 6-1. The five-run advantage proved to be just enough cushion for the Rams to stave off a Howard Payne comeback.
Kayla Camacho, a transfer to HT from Howard Payne, earned the complete-game victory as she struck out 10 Yellow Jackets in game one. She tossed 172 pitches in Tuesday's opener.
GAME TWO: Howard Payne 12, HT Rams 0
Camacho again got the ball in game two, but fatigue set in as the Jackets claimed a six-inning victory. At game's end, she had thrown a total of 288 official pitches Tuesday.
Roblero picked up two of HT's four hits in the second game. She and Alaniz each had three hits over the two games.
