NEW ORLEANS – Huston-Tillotson University softball player Alexis Tamez was named the HBCU Athletic Conference's Newcomer of the Week for her performance in games during the week of March 2 through 8.
A junior transfer from Brownsville, Texas, and Alvin Community College, Tamez earned the Newcomer of the Week honor for the third consecutive week. It was also her fourth conference honor in three weeks.
Tamez led the Rams' hitting attack by going 5-for-10 at the plate with a double, three RBIs, and a .545 on-base percentage as HT took two out of three games from Talladega (Ala.) and improved to 5-1 in conference play. Her .455 batting average leads the team, and she has hit safely in all five conference games in which she has batted.
Unlike in previous weeks, it was Tamez' hitting that anchored her nomination. A talented pitcher, she took the loss in HT's sole setback to Talladega. However, she finished the week in the circle with a solid relief performance, allowing just one baserunner out of the six she faced in the finale to stop Talladega's rally on a long and rainy day. The visiting Tornados had cut HT's 19-run lead to 20-12 in the Saturday finale but could not continue their hitting after Tamez came into pitch.
Of the 20 weekly awards given by the HBCU Athletic Conference thus far in the season, HT players have won eight of those honors, more than any other team in the league. The Rams swept all four awards (Pitcher, Hitter, Freshman, and Newcomer) the previous week.
The Rams return when they open a three-game series at home against Rust College (Miss.) with a doubleheader Saturday, March 14. First pitch from Mabson Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
