AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's men's basketball team overcame a nine-point, second-half deficit Tuesday en route to a 68-64 win over the College of Biblical Studies–Houston.
At HT's Branch Gymnasium,
Kon Chol poured in a game-high 14 points and led three Rams scoring in double-figures as Huston-Tillotson (2-4) won their first home game of the season.
Auston Chatman scored 12 points and pulled in nine rebounds for the Rams, while
Faybeyon Shelton chipped in 10 points and
Jaylen Williams added nine points for HT.
Charles Hallmon scored eight points and hauled in five rebounds off the HT bench.
All five starters for Biblical Studies (4-3) scored at least 11 points, with Reese Jordan, Jesse White, and Corey Nickerson scoring 12 points apiece. CBS–Houston is a first-year program in the National Christian College Athletic Association and whose only losses have been to HT, defending Red River Athletic Conference champion Xavier (La.), and NCAA Division I program McNeese State.
The visiting Ambassadors led by as many as nine points with 13:29 remaining in the game. They led 51-43 with 10 minutes remaining before the Rams scored 10 unanswered points to reclaim a two-point lead with 7:19 left in the half. HT forced four turnovers during that span.
HT then scored seven of the next nine points to take a 58-53 lead. The visitors were unable to tie the game from that point forward, and Hallmon's second-chance layup with 40 seconds remaining gave the Rams the cushion they needed to secure the win.
The Rams overcame a 45-36 deficit in rebounding; the Ambassadors held a 20-7 advantage in offensive rebounds but could only turn those 20 rebounds into 12 second-chance points.
HT's men's basketball team will return to action after Thanksgiving when they open RRAC play on Thursday, Nov. 30, at Texas College. Their game will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game between the two teams that begins at 5:30 p.m.
