HOBBS, N.M. – The University of the Southwest's women's basketball team finished Thursday's game against Huston-Tillotson by scoring the final 18 points of the contest to stun the Rams 70-63.
Milinda Arguellez' 28 points led the Mustangs, who snapped an eight-game losing streak to Huston-Tillotson dating back to 2018.
Dyana Offutt led the Rams with 17 points, while
Danielle Porter turned in her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds off the HT bench.
Huston-Tillotson (5-5) fell to 3-5 in Red River Athletic Conference play with the setback. Southwest (N.M.) (7-7) improved to 3-5 in league play.
A layup by
Destiny Stanford with 7:38 remaining gave the Rams a 63-52 lead, which matched their largest lead of the evening. The points were the last HT scored in the game as the Mustangs climbed their way back into the game before taking the lead for good with 2:33 remaining in the final quarter.
Southwest forced 11 HT turnovers during the final seven and a half minutes of the game and held HT to 0-for-11 shooting from the field.
The Rams got 14 points from
Anessa Dussette, followed by six points from Stanford.
HT outrebounded the Mustangs 50-25 and enjoyed a 15-1 advantage in second-chance points. Meanwhile, Southwest outscored the visitors 27-5 in points off turnovers.
The Rams return to action Saturday when they visit Dallas for a game at Paul Quinn College. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
