WOMEN'S HOOPS: Rams sizzle in 86-62 win over Jarvis Christian

AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's women's basketball team dominated in the second quarter and seized control of their game against Jarvis Christian as the Rams raced to an 86-62 win Saturday.

Destiny Stanford scored a game-high 18 points to lead five HT players scoring in double-figures; she also handed out five assists.

Saturday's win was the fourth for the Rams (9-6, 7-6 RRAC) over their last five games. Jarvis Christian (10-9) fell to 6-8 in Red River Athletic Conference play.

Freshman post player Danielle Porter scored 14 points and blocked six shots in the game for the Rams, while Dyana Offutt tallied 11 points for HT.

The Rams also got significant production from their reserves, who outscored Jarvis Christian 34-10 in bench points. Anessa Dussette scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting in a reserve role, and freshman Ziara James poured in a season-high 12 points.

Jarvis Christian took a 21-18 lead into the second quarter and led by as many as seven points during the period. Trailing 27-23 with 7:14 remaining before halftime, HT took control of the game with 10 unanswered points midway through the second period that gave the Rams a six-point lead.

The visiting Bulldogs could do little to stop the Rams before halftime, as the home team outscored Jarvis Christian 22-5 over the last seven minutes of the first half to take a 45-32 lead into the midgame break. The Rams' lead never slipped into the single digits after halftime.

HT players drained a season-best 11 3-pointers in the game, with Stanford knocking down four triples in seven attempts. The Rams' 47.8 percent (11 of 23) showing at the 3-point circle was also a season high.

The Rams return to action Thursday, Feb. 1, when they open a two-game road trip at Texas A&M–Texarkana. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
