AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's volleyball was turned away in their return to Red River Athletic Conference play Friday as the visiting Texas A&M–Texarkana Eagles were victorious in three sets.
Scores of the match were 25-12, 25-20, and 25-8.
In front of a supportive and enthusiastic crowd at HT's Branch Gymnasium,
Chloe Gaytan and
Olivia De La Cruz led the Rams' offense with eight kills and five kills respectively.
Angelina Munoz posted a double-double for the Rams, handing out 20 assists and tallying 10 digs.
Senior libero
Danelle McCullough anchored the Rams' back row with a match-high 14 digs.
Ja'Kerra Holt led Texas A&M–Texarkana (10-10, 6-1 RRAC) with 11 kills and a .476 hitting percentage.
The Rams chipped away at big Texarkana leads in each of the first two sets. After falling behind 6-1 in the opening set, HT responded with six of the next eight points to cut the visitors' advantage to 8-7. However, a 10-2 midway through the set gave the Eagles a comfortable 20-10 lead.
Trailing 23-14 in set two, the Rams, buoyed by their home crowd, rallied for five straight points, forcing the Eagles to call their first timeout. Four of those points came on consecutive Texarkana attack errors.
Because of the struggles late in set two, the Rams ended up out-hitting the Eagles .133 to .105 in the set. Texarkana hit .441 (16 kills against only one error on 34 attempts) in the final set.
The Rams and Eagles return to action Saturday, Oct. 5, at Branch Gymnasium. First serve is scheduled for noon.
