AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's men's soccer team claimed a much-needed win Saturday as they defeated visiting Houston–Victoria 2-0 at the Onion Creek Soccer Complex.
Wesley Albright's goal in the 24th minute proved to be the match-winner as the Rams (2-3-2) improved to 1-3-1 in Red River Athletic Conference play.
Though observers may have thought UHV controlled the pace of play (Huston-Tillotson was called for 21 fouls against only 11 for Victoria), the Rams' defense allowed few quality scoring chances for the Jaguars. HT goalkeeper
Juan Acosta made seven saves en route to the shutout.
HT fans (and their coaching staff) breathed a little easier in the 85th minute when Octavio Lopez was in the right place in the goal box to put home a second goal off a rebound from Cuan Kingwill's shot that hit the crossbar. Lopez also provided the assist on Albright's strike in the first half.
The Rams outshot their guests 19-14, firing 12 shots in the second half. HT held an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal.
The win over Houston–Victoria was the first for the Rams since the 2011 season.
Huston-Tillotson continues its homestand next week with matches against Paul Quinn College and Southwest (N.M.). On Thursday, Oct. 10, the Rams host PQC at the Onion Creek Soccer Complex, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
