AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's women's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2024-25 season Saturday as the Rams defeated Wiley 65-47 at the Austin Area Urban League's HBCU Basketball Classic.
At the Austin Convention Center,
Wilashia Burleson and
Danielle Porter both turned in double-double performances for the Rams (1-2). Burleson tallied game highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Porter contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Aliyah Carter scored 17 points and handed out five assists for the Rams; she also secured eight rebounds. Zacyria Dozier came off Wiley's bench to score a team-best 10 points for the Wildcats (0-3).
The Rams seized control of the game early, taking their first double-digit lead with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter with a fast-break layup from Porter that gave HT a 14-4 lead. HT led 20-9 at the end of the first quarter.
A strong second half by the Wildcats cut into HT's advantage, and the Rams held a 29-28 lead going into halftime. The teams went back-and-forth after halftime before the Rams pulled away by scoring 13 of the last 14 points in the third quarter's final 4:40.
HT's 51-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter proved to be a big enough cushion for the Rams, who never saw their lead go into single digits in the game's final 10 minutes.
Destiny Stanford scored eight points and tallied four assists for the Rams.
Gabby Cantu recorded three steals and three assists for Huston-Tillotson.
The Rams open Red River Athletic Conference play Thursday, Nov. 14, when they travel to Dallas to visit Paul Quinn College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
