BASEBALL: Rams shake off Rust for best start in more than two decades

DALLAS – Huston-Tillotson University's baseball team continued their winning ways to open the 2024 season Thursday as they defeated Rust College 15-3.

At Dallas College–Mountain View, the Rams scored in every inning played as they improved their record to 5-0.

Josh Wilk, Luke Vizcarra, and Noah Alvarez knocked two RBIs apiece and seven of HT's nine starters collected two or more base hits against the Bearcats. Vizcarra's sacrifice fly that capped a four-run first inning proved to be the game-winning RBI.

Ethan Walker picked up his second win on the mound as he struck out four batters while only giving up three runs, all of them unearned. Rece Houghton, Sam Lozano, and Anthony Larzabal all tossed scoreless relief innings.

The Rams' undefeated start through five games is their first in more than 20 years. They swept a four-game home series from Bethany College (Kan.) last week. HT began the 2016 season by winning three out of games from Bethany.

HT gets big test this weekend when they open Red River Athletic Conference play at home against pre-season conference favorite LSU–Shreveport. The Pilots are ranked No. 5 in the preseason NAIA Baseball poll.

The series with LSU–Shreveport begins Friday at 6 p.m., and concludes with a doubleheader Saturday that will start at noon.
