AUSTIN – A big swing in game two of Huston-Tillotson University's baseball doubleheader Tuesday shifted momentum to the Rams and gave them a non-conference split with Southwestern Christian (Okla.).
With the Rams trailing 3-0 with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the second inning,
Gary Wafford hit a grand slam over the fence in the deepest part of centerfield to give HT a 4-3 lead. The momentum shift carried over to the Rams for the rest of the contest as they won 8-3.
Southwestern Christian won the first game by a score of 7-1.
Wafford's grand slam energized the entire team both at the plate and in the field. HT starting pitcher
Jeremiah Molina retired the next six batters he faced and left the game with 6-3 lead and four strikeouts after four innings. When the Rams completed the seven-inning contest, Molina earned his first victory in an HT uniform.
Bryce Sanchez pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Rams in game two.
Brycen Lee pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the win for the Rams.
DiAngelo Del Valle knocked an RBI single in the third inning to stretch HT's lead to 5-3.
Robbie Brue and
Brian Gardner added RBIs in the bottom of the fourth, while
Adam Sheehan added an insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth.
Kendall Brown knocked HT's lone RBI in the opening game with a single through the left side that scored
Alec Worden in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brown collected two hits in the opening game.
The Rams return to Red River Athletic Conference play this weekend when they travel to Tyler to face Texas College. Friday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
