AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's women's basketball team was unable to sustain its hot start to Saturday's contest as the Rams fell 66-54 to visiting Wiley (Texas).
At HT's Branch Gymnasium, the Rams scored the first 18 points of the game and led 18-5 at the end of the first quarter before the visiting Wildcats (10-3, 5-1 HBCUAC) clawed their way back into the game.
Wilashia Burleson and Jade Hilliary scored 15 points apiece for the Rams; Hilliary also tallied a game-high six steals. Destiny Stanford scored 10 points for HT, while Hayley Broussard chipped in seven points and blocked four Wiley shots during the game.
The 'Cats were led by Mia Thomas' 15 points off the Wiley bench.
Though the visitors spent most of the second and third quarters chipping away at HT's lead, it was Wiley's 14-1 run over a three-and-a-half-minute span near the end of the third quarter that gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game at 46-43 with 31 seconds remaining in the frame. Wiley pulled away from HT's eight-player roster by winning the final frame 20-9.
Wiley shot 53 percent (17 of 32) from the floor during the second half, while the Rams were held to 19.4 percent shooting (6 of 31) after halftime.
