AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's women's basketball team resumed HBCU Athletic Conference play Thursday, falling 70-49 to Philander Smith (Ark.)
At HT's Branch Gymnasium, senior Wilashia Burleson recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, but the Rams struggled to make baskets as they shot 25 percent (14 of 56) from the floor during the game.
Samya Johnson scored 17 points off the Philander Smith bench to lead the Panthers (9-5, 4-1 HBCUAC) to the win. HT (4-9) fell to 0-5 in conference play.
To just look at the box score, the game was fairly even except for HT's shooting woes, as there was no significant margin in turnovers (HT 18, Philander Smith 16) and free throws (HT 19-for-27, Philander Smith 17-for-30). The game itself had a different feel, however, particularly in the third quarter when the Rams were whistled for eight fouls, despite scoring 15 points to Philander Smith's 16.
A 3-pointer from Philander Smith's Miracle Thomas with 7:41 remaining in the final period seemed to take the wind out of HT's sails as the Panthers stretched their lead to 60-44. The visitors led by as many as 22 points in the final 10 minutes.
Xaria Culver and Destiny Stanford scored six points apiece for the Rams, while Jade Hilliary chipped in five points for HT.
