NEW ORLEANS – Huston-Tillotson University baseball players Joseph Brown and Trey Garza claimed two of the four weekly awards given by the HBCU Athletic Conference. The duo was honored for their performances during the week of March 2 through 8.
Brown, a freshman outfielder from Missouri City, Texas, was named the conference's Player of the Week. Garza, a junior from Round Rock, Texas, earned Newcomer of the Week honors.
Also a nominee for the conference's Freshman of the Week award, Brown hit .500 and slugged 1.125 during Huston-Tillotson's three HBCU Athletic Conference games this week. He hit a game-tying two-RBI double with the bases loaded for his first collegiate hit during the Rams' four-run, ninth-inning 10-9 comeback win against on Thursday, March 5.
Brown then hit a two-run home run and a two-RBI double in the series finale. During the three-game series against Wiley, he scored three runs and stole two bases.
Garza went 7-for-10 at the plate during HT's weekend HBCU Athletic Conference series against Wiley, helping the Rams win two out of three games. In Thursday's 10-9 come from behind win, he went 4-for-5 with two RBIs.
A transfer from Eastern Arizona Junior College, Garza compiled an eight-game hitting streak against non-NCAA Division I teams and batted .538 during that stretch. For the week of his award, he compiled a 1.000 fielding percentage in his 10 chances in conference play and committed only one error in 14 overall chances.
The Rams (14-13, 3-3 HBCUAC) return to action this weekend when they travel to Tougaloo (Miss.) for a three-game conference series. The teams begin play Saturday with a doubleheader, scheduled to start at noon.
