NEW ORLEANS – Huston-Tillotson University's baseball team concluded its three-game weekend series at Southern–New Orleans, with the host Knights prevailing 9-6 Sunday.
The Rams return to Austin having one of the three HBCU Athletic Conference games between the teams, having split a Saturday doubleheader with the Knights at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
SUNO (10-9, 5-6 HBCUAC) scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stretch their lead to 9-2; HT scored three in the top of the eighth and had the bases loaded but were unable to erase the home team's lead. Jaden Corzine knocked an RBI single in the eighth, which was followed by Josh Wilk and Kadarien Harris drawing bases-loaded walks.
Wilk, HT's senior second baseman, tied the game at 1-1 with his first collegiate homerun in the top of the third inning. Payton Johnson hit his HT-leading third homerun of the season in the top of the seventh to cut SUNO's lead to 4-2.
Sam Lozano was the pitcher of record for the Rams (19-15, 7-5 HBCUAC) as he made his second start of the year and struck out five batters over five and two-thirds innings. He gave up only three earned runs but took the loss at SUNO never trailed after retaking the lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Bryce Sanchez, who started HT's Tuesday home game against Our Lady of the Lake and picked up his first collegiate win in that contest, pitched one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief at SUNO on Sunday.
The Rams return to action Friday, March 27, when they open a three-game series at home against Philander Smith (Ark.); Friday's doubleheader will consist of two seven-inning games, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Downs Field in east Austin.
