NEW ORLEANS – Huston-Tillotson University's Sam Lozano was named the HBCU Athletic Conference's Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday as part of its weekly sports awards for performances the week of March 23 through 29.

Lozano, a redshirt sophomore from Duncanville, Texas, was named the conference's Pitcher of the Week following his complete-game shutout of Philander Smith (Ark.) this past Saturday. The lefthander struck out 14 batters and allowed only four hits en route to the complete-game, nine-inning victory.

In leading the Rams to the 6-0 win and a sweep of Philander Smith, Lozano recorded the first nine-inning, complete-game shutout by an HT pitcher since Steel Kupec shut out Texas College in 2023. His 14 strikeouts were the most by a Rams pitcher this decade, and in all likelihood, this century.

Lozano is the third HT pitcher to be named the HBCU Athletic Conference's Player of the Week over the last five weeks. Teammate Weston Bailey won the honor two weeks ago, and Ethan Walker won his second such award of the season two weeks prior to Bailey's honor.

The conference awards Player of the Week, Pitcher of the Week, Freshman of the Week, and Newcomer of the Week each week. (The Newcomer of the Week award is open to players who have transferred from another college and are in their first year in the conference.) HT players have won nine of the 36 awards this season, and seven in the last five weeks.

The Rams return to action Tuesday, April 7, when they travel to Waxahachie, Texas, for a non-conference game at Nelson University. They resume HBCU Athletic Conference play Friday, April 10, when they open a three-game series at home against Dillard (La.).
