AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University kicks off its 2023-24 athletic season this week when the men's and women's soccer teams take the field against Harris-Stowe (Mo.) in Dallas on Thursday evening.
Â
The matches, scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., will be hosted by Paul Quinn College.
Â
HT's women's team returns nine players from their 2022 team as the Rams aim to improve upon last season's competitive 4-8-3 record; the Rams went 3-7-1 in Red River Athletic Conference play.
Â
Most of HT's back row and midfield return, while head coach Dr. Carlos Cervantes welcomes a new class of strikers and attackers to the team. Of the 30 goals the Rams scored last season, 11 were scored by returners to the 2023 roster.Â
Â
Neydelyn Bonilla, who scored three goals as a freshman in 2022, is the team's leading returning scorer.
Â
Meanwhile, the HT men's soccer team seeks a return to the postseason RRAC Tournament after 6-5 in league play last season (8-7 overall).
Â
Under the direction of new head coach – and HT alumnus – Aaron Yancy, the HT men's team also returns considerable experience but will look to find new scorers for the 2023 campaign. Pablo Gonzalez' two goals for the 2022 Rams lead all 2023 returners.
Â
The Rams finished sixth in the RRAC men's soccer standings and advanced to the conference tournament quarterfinals against Louisiana Christian. The 2023 Ram men are picked to finish sixth out of 14 teams in the conference.
Â
The soccer teams will be back in Central Texas for doubleheaders at Schreiner (Saturday, Aug. 26, 1 and 3 p.m.) and Texas Lutheran (Tuesday, Aug. 29, 5 and 7 p.m.). HT opens its home schedule and RRAC play Thursday, Sept. 14, when the Rams host Jarvis Christian in a doubleheader at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.
