MEN'S HOOPS: Rams topple Jarvis Christian 63-58

AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's men's basketball team held off a late charge from Jarvis Christian and claimed a 63-58 win Saturday over the visiting Bulldogs.

Jacob Brown scored 18 points – 14 in the second half – while Auston Chatman added 16 points of his own to lead the Rams to their second win over the last four games.

The Rams never trailed in Saturday's game and led for more than 36 minutes for the second time in as many games. This time the Rams stanched their opponent's rally as HT's lead never dipped under four points during the game's final 15 minutes.

The Bulldogs (8-10, 6-8 RRAC) did cut away at Huston-Tillotson's 13-point lead the Rams enjoyed midway through the second half. Jarvis had a chance to cut the lead to three with 1:42 remaining in the game, but Brandon Deravine missed the second of his two free throws, maintaining HT's 60-56 lead.

Both teams traded missed shots and turnovers in the final two minutes until HT's Kon Chol blocked a Jamari Robertson shot over to Brown, who was fouled with seven seconds remaining. He sank two free throws to put HT up by six, finally assuring the Rams of the win.

Brown sank nine out of 10 free throws, all in the second half. James Harrison scored nine points off the HT bench, while Khalif Allim grabbed 16 rebounds in addition to scoring six points.

The Rams (6-13, 4-9 RRAC) return to action Thursday, Feb. 1, when they visit Texas A&M–Texarkana to open a two-game road trip. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
