AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Red River Athletic Conference play after defeating visiting Louisiana Christian 63-55 Thursday.
At HT's Branch Gymnasium, freshman
Aliyah Carter scored 16 points to lead three Ram players in double-figures.
Danielle Porter scored 14 points and pulled in 13 rebounds, while
Wilashia Burleson chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.
DaKayla Howard led Louisiana Christian with 13 points. Teammate Kylei Leblanc scored 10 rebounds and blocked six HT shots.
The win improved HT's (4-2) league record to 3-0.
Huston-Tillotson controlled the first quarter and led 18-11 after the first 10 minutes, but the Wildcats responded with a 21-point second quarter and took a 32-31 lead into halftime.
The game went back-and-forth in the second half before the Rams pulled away with six unanswered points late in the fourth quarter. The Rams made six consecutive free throws between the 4:06 and 1:30 marks of the final quarter while holding the Wildcats (1-3, 1-2 RRAC) to three missed shots and two turnovers during that span.
The Rams shot 36 free throws in the game, making 26 of their attempts (72.2 percent). HT players shot 14-of-21 (67 percent) in the final quarter.
Tyaija Coleman scored seven points for the Rams, while
Summer Thomas came off HT's bench and scored seven points.
The Rams return to action Saturday when they host Xavier (La.). Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
