Our Lady of the Lake narrowly escapes HT with 73-71 win

Two 3-point attempts in the final seconds miss the mark

AUSTIN – The visiting Saints of Our Lady of the Lake outlasted Huston-Tillotson's women's basketball team in a back-and-forth game Saturday, defeating the Rams 73-71.
 
At HT's Branch Gymnasium, Evangeline Hernandez' layup with 12 seconds remaining in the contest proved to be the game-winner after two 3-point tries from the home team in the waning seconds were off the mark.
 
The Rams (5-5, 4-3 RRAC) dropped their second consecutive contest despite a pair of 20-point performances from Wilashia Burleson and Destiny Stanford. Burleson finished with nine rebounds, while Carter handed out six assists.
 
HT also got a double-double performance from Summer Thomas, who made her first start of the season. The senior from Round Rock, Texas scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting and pulled in 11 rebounds.
 
Carlea Owens led OLLU (6-4, 4-3 RRAC) with 20 points and 10 rebounds; she shot 10-of-12 from the field and scored six points in the fourth quarter. Hernandez chipped in 15 points off the OLLU bench.
 
The game was close for the entirety of its 40 minutes as neither team could build a lead of more than seven points. There were 10 ties and 18 lead changes in Saturday's game.
 
HT held an 18-7 advantage in offensive rebounds, which yielded a 22-7 advantage in second-chance points. However, the Saints shot 52 percent (28 of 54) from the floor in the game and were 9-of-13 shooting in the second quarter and 8-of-15 shooting in the third period.
 
Destiny Stanford scored nine points and grabbed five steals for the Rams in the game.
 
The Rams travel to Louisiana for their next two games as they visit Red River Athletic Conference opponents LSU–Alexandria and LSU–Shreveport this week. They visit LSU–Alexandria on Thursday, Dec. 12, with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
