AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University will send student-athletes to compete in both the men's and women's sections of the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships next week at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind.
The HT women compete in both the 100-meter and 400-meter relays. Senior runner
Jaymee Yelton will also compete individually in the women's 400- and 800-meter races.
HT's men's team will be represented by sophomore Emmanuel Idris, who will compete in the 100-meter dash.
The women's 400-meter relay team currently has the eighth best time in the NAIA, having turned in a performance of 3 minutes, 48.42 seconds at the Red River Athletic Conference championship meet last month. Yelton, sophomores Chaleica Booker and Ayanna Johnson, and freshman Jariah Jackson-Simon were the conference champions in that event; junior
Dejah Okonji and sophomore Jazmyne White are the team's alternates.
HT's 100-meter women's relay team finished second at the RRAC championship meet with a qualifying time of 47.40 seconds. Booker, Johnson, Okonji and White are scheduled to run the event, with Jackson-Simon and Yelton serving as alternates.
Yelton earned NAIA All-American honors after finishing in seventh place in the 800-meter run at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships earlier this year with a time of 2:18.18. Her outdoor time of 2:10.75 is a personal best and ranks seventh among all NAIA performances this season.
Idris set a personal best last month with a time of 10.28 in the men's 100-meter dash at the Angelo State University invitational. That showing currently ranks eighth in the NAIA, and is third among underclassmen.
The NAIA championships will begin Wednesday, May 21.
