GEORGETOWN, Texas – After inclement weather rained out what should have been their season-opening match, Huston-Tillotson University's women's soccer team opened their 2025 regular season Monday with a non-conference match at NCAA Division III Southwestern (Texas).
Â
A large roster and a flurry of Pirate goals in the last six minutes of the first half lifted Southwestern to a 6-0 victory.
Â
Though they were held scoreless, there were some bright spots for the Rams as they faced a formidable opponent on the road. The Rams outshot their hosts 17-14 in the match and enjoyed a 14-7 advantage in shots during the final 45 minutes.
Â
Another highlight for the Rams was
Sallie Buhr's performance on set pieces. The freshman from Stuttgart, Germany showed off free kicks that were powerful and accurate and will be a scoring threat throughout the season.
Â
All three goalkeepers on the HT roster saw action, with freshman
Citlaly Vences (Baytown, Texas) making two saves and giving up only one goal in 31 minutes of action. Vences was the District 23-6A goalkeeper of the year following her Spring 2025 season at Goose Creek Memorial High School.
Â
Matti Penders and Kristine Garcia each scored two goals for Southwestern (Texas).
Â
The Rams face another tough challenge in their next contest as they prepare for the upcoming NAIA and HBCU Athletic Conference season. HT makes the short trip across Interstate Highway 35 to visit NCAA Division II St. Edward's on Saturday; kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. on the St. Edward's campus.
