ROUND ROCK, Texas – Huston-Tillotson University's men's soccer team helped seal a doubleheader sweep of North American (Texas) on Sunday with a 2-1 win over the visiting Stallions.
Manuel 'Lito' Guevara scored a goal 39 seconds after the opening whistle and then assisted on another as the Rams (4-4) claimed their first win over an NAIA opponent this season.
On HT's opening possession,
Dominiq Munson-Garza sent a pass back to Guevara well outside the penalty area, which Guevara then converted with a perfect strike from approximately 27 yards out. In the 23rd minute, it was Guevara's long pass that
Christian Kisukulu received and then converted to a goal from 16 yards away.
Kisukulu's goal proved the be the matchwinner as the Stallions briefly tied the match thanks to a converted penalty kick that was awarded after officials ruled that HT goalkeeper
Juan Acosta fouled a Stallions player on a breakaway chance inside the penalty area.
Despite the penalty kick, Acosta stopped four shots in the first half and was the winning goalkeeper of record for the match.
Luke Phillips stopped two shots for the Rams in a relief appearance during the second half.
HT's 2-1 victory completed a sweep that was bookended by the HT women's team's 2-0 shutout victory over North American. The Ram men's victory was their first-ever triumph over the Stallions in four tries in a series that dates back to 2022.
The Rams return to action Thursday, Sept. 18, when they visit Texas A&M–Victoria (formerly known as the University of Houston at Victoria). The men's match is scheduled for approximately 3:30 p.m.
