Huston-Tillotson University's volleyball team claimed a small piece of history Saturday when the Rams left Tougaloo College (Miss.) with two match victories.
The Rams swept their host in three sets before taking a four-set win over in-state, non-conference rival Jarvis Christian.
In defeating Tougaloo College, the Rams won their first HBCU Athletic Conference league match. HT (3-7, 1-0 HBCUAC) won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-13.
Chloe Gaytan (San Antonio, Texas / Veterans Memorial) and
Lindsey Morris (Fort Worth, Texas / North Crowley) knocked down 10 kills apiece to lead the Rams to their first conference victory over the Bulldogs. Freshman blocker
Hayley Broussard (West Columbia, Texas / Columbia) added four kills and no attack errors on 10 attempts while also taking part in seven blocks (two solo).
Senior transfer
Taylor Fisher (Del Valle, Texas / Henderson State) led the HT defense with 15 digs, which was followed by seven digs from Broussard.
Jordis Taylor (Vancouver, Wash. / Heritage) handed out 15 assists, while
Aryanna Gonzalez (Killeen, Texas / Chaparral) gave out 10 assists.
An 8-2 run midway through the first set against Tougaloo helped the Rams set the tone for the day as they established 14-8 lead; HT never trailed for the duration of the set.
HT's frontline of Gaytan and Morris also led the way for the Rams in their second match of the day, a four-set win over former Red River Athletic Conference rival Jarvis Christian. HT took that match by scores of 25-17, 25-14, 17-25, and 25-21.
Gaytan knocked down 14 kills against Jarvis Christian, while Morris put away 11 kills. Taylor posted a double-double with 22 assists and 12 digs, while Fisher again led the defense with 16 digs.
The Rams play their first home conference match as an HBCUAC institution Thursday, Sept. 18, when they host Dillard (La.) The match is the first of three matches in three days for the Rams, who also host Texas College (Friday, Sept. 19) and Southern–New Orleans (Saturday, Sept. 20).
First serve Thursday between the Rams and Bleu Devils is scheduled for 6 p.m.
