Rams complete weekend sweeps of Philander Smith, Wiley

HT remains undefeated in HBCU Athletic Conference play

AUSTIN – Huston-Tillotson University's volleyball team remained undefeated in HBCU Athletic Conference play after sweeping back-to-back home matches this past weekend.
 
The Rams (8-8, 5-0) swept Philander Smith (Ark.) by scores of 26-24, 33-31, and 25-17 Friday. Saturday saw the Rams sweep in-state rival Wiley by scores of 25-14, 25-14, and 25-21.
 
HT players hit .352 in Saturday's sweep of Wiley, which was the best single-match hitting percentage for the Rams since their 2019 Red River Athletic Conference championship season.
 
Freshman hitter Lindsey Morris led the Rams with 10 kills against the Wildcats, while fellow freshman Hayley Broussard put away eight kills while committing no errors on 15 attempts, good for a .533 hitting percentage.
 
Jordis Taylor handed out 18 assists Saturday, followed by 15 assists from Aryanna Gonzalez. Aniyah Asberry led the HT defense with 13 digs against the 'Cats.
 
Friday's win over Philander Smith featured two very close sets. The 33-31 second set won by HT featured 21 tie scores and five lead changes before the Rams ultimately prevailed.
 
In the win over Philander Smith senior Chloe Gaytan knocked down 14 kills and hit .393 for the match, while Morris added 13 kills for the Rams. Taylor posted a double-double with team highs of 21 assists and 18 digs.
 
Malaya Bennett and Taylor Fisher tallied 14 digs apiece in the Friday triumph over the Panthers.
 
The Rams return to action Wednesday they make they travel to northwest Austin for a non-conference match at Concordia Texas. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
