NEW ORLEANS – Huston-Tillotson University student-athletes swept the HBCU Athletic Conference's Pitcher of the Week awards for baseball and softball this week.
Weston Bailey, a senior transfer from NCAA Division II Ouachita Baptist, was named the conference's Pitcher of the Week in baseball, while junior transfer Alexis Tamez was named the league's Softball Pitcher of the Week.
HT's baseball team swept three games at Tougaloo (Miss.) last weekend, with Bailey tossing a complete-game shutout to lead the Rams to a 7-0 victory in the second game of the series. The Austin native struck out five batters and gave up only three hits while not issuing any walks. Bailey did not allow a runner to reach third base in the game as we won his third consecutive start.
The award was Bailey's second of the season, as he was named the conference's Newcomer of the Week two weeks prior.
Meanwhile, Tamez added to her collection of weekly honors as she received her second softball Pitcher of the Week award over the last three weeks. She claimed both of Huston-Tillotson's complete-game shutouts this past weekend as the Rams swept Rust College (Miss.). Tamez struck out 11 batters and allowed only six hits and no walks over 10 innings pitched.Â
Heading into this weekend's conference series at Oakwood (Ala.), Tamez has compiled a streak of 12 consecutive scoreless innings pitched. She has not been scored upon in her last four day-game appearances, a streak of 16 and 2/3 innings that includes three five-inning shutouts.
Tamez was also nominated for the conference's Newcomer of the Week award but was denied her fourth consecutive honor in that category. She has five weekly awards from the conference this season.
Of the 24 weekly softball awards given by the conference since the start of February, Rams players have taken eight of the awards, more than any other team in the league.
The baseball team opens a three-game series at Southern–New Orleans on Saturday, while the softball team begins its three-game series at Oakwood on Saturday evening.
