NEW ORLEANS – Huston-Tillotson men's soccer players took two of the first four weekly awards given by the HBCU Athletic Conference, the league announced Tuesday.
Junior midfielder Jaylen Melendez (San Antonio, Texas / Brandeis) was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week, while Gavin Latas (Pflugerville, Texas / Connally) took Freshman of the Week honors.
Melendez scored the match-tying goal in the 69th minute of HT's season-opener on Aug. 20 at Texas Lutheran. The Rams left Seguin with a 1-1 draw with the Bulldogs.
Latas, a true freshman, scored HT's lone goal in a 4-1 setback against intracity opponent Concordia Texas.
The Rams (0-1-1) visit former Red River Athletic Conference rival Our Lady of the Lake on Thursday, Aug. 27, in San Antonio. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and will follow the women's match between the two schools.
