NEW ORLEANS – Even just the potential for goals was enough to give Huston-Tillotson two of the HBCU Athletic Conference's first four weekly soccer awards, the league announced this week.
 
Despite opening the 2026 season with a 1-0 setback at Concordia Texas, first-year HT players Mariyah McCrae and Kennytzia De La Torre-Arias were named the conference's Newcomer of the Week, and Freshman of the Week, respectively.
 
McCrae, originally from Anchorage, Alaska, and a transfer from NCAA Division I Jacksonville, fired three shots toward the Concordia goal, two of which required saves. Her footwork and movement both with and without the ball gave HT fans a glimpse of her skill that will benefit the Rams as the season progresses.
 
Del Valle High School alumna De La Torre-Arias, the Spring 2026 District 26-6A Utility Player of the Year, made a smooth transition to the collegiate game Saturday. She was credited with five shots (two on goal) as she also weaved through Concordia's midfield and defense.
 
The Rams had more scoring opportunities in last week's match at Concordia Texas, but only the host Tornados were able to capitalize in the one-goal result.
 
HT returns to action Thursday when they visit Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
