NEW ORLEANS – Huston-Tillotson University men's soccer player Gavin Latas was named the HBCU Athletic Conference's Freshman of the Week for the week of August 24 through 30, the league announced Tuesday.

A first-year collegian from Pflugerville, Texas (Connally), Latas has received the weekly award as the conference's top freshman men's soccer in each of the first two weeks of the 2026 season, as voted upon by the HBCU Athletic Conference's coaches and sports information directors.

Latas scored the match-tying goal in the final 10 seconds of HT's 2-2 draw at former Red River Athletic Conference rival Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio on Aug. 27. The goal was Latas' second of the season, and second in as many contests.

He is the team leader in goals scored through four HT games in 2026. Latas is also tied for the team lead with Manuel 'Lito' Guevara, with four points.

The Rams (0-1-3) visit the greater Houston area Thursday, Sept. 3, for a match against North American University. North American began its athletics program this decade and was a conference opponent of the Rams in the Red River Athletic Conference for two seasons before HT moved the HBCU Athletic Conference in 2025.

Thursday's men's game between HT and North American is the second contest of a women's-and-men's doubleheader at the Deer Park Soccer Complex, located east of Houston at 901 East Boulevard in Deer Park, Texas. The women's game will kick off at 5 p.m., with the men's game to kickoff approximately 15 minutes after the women's match ends.
